About This Place

Nestled just a stone’s throw from Balham tube station, The Apple Blue offers a vibrant and inviting café experience that effortlessly blends the charm of a patisserie with the heartiness of a breakfast and brunch restaurant. This beloved spot on 212 Balham High Rd has rightfully earned its reputation thanks to a carefully curated menu that celebrates both comforting classics and innovative twists, making it a must-visit for locals and visitors alike.

The moment you step inside, the warm, bustling atmosphere speaks volumes. Friendly staff greet each guest with genuine hospitality, setting the tone for a relaxed yet lively dining experience. Whether it’s a quiet weekday morning or a sunny Saturday afternoon, the space strikes a perfect balance between cozy and convivial—a haven for coffee lovers, brunch aficionados, and pastry devotees.

The Apple Blue’s menu is a delightful treasure trove of flavours and textures. Signature dishes like the Dutch Baby smothered with golden fried chicken reveal a mastery of flavor contrasts—crispy skin against soft, airy pancake—a dish that dances on the palate and warms the soul. Another standout is the shakshuka, served with perfectly poached eggs nestled in a fragrant, spiced tomato sauce, offering a rich and hearty start to any day. For those who cherish savory sophistication, dishes such as Turkish Eggs and Eggs Royale showcase a harmonious blend of freshness and indulgence.

Pastry lovers will find themselves spoiled for choice. The almond croissant, with its flaky layers and nutty sweetness, pairs wonderfully with a smooth cortado or a velvety chai latte—both expertly crafted to complement the café’s baked goods. The bakery’s offerings extend beyond the traditional: from buttery breakfast croissants and English muffins to indulgent chocolate chip cookies and dense, fudgy brownies, every bite feels thoughtfully prepared. Not to mention the cupcakes and the signature Apple Blue T, which provide perfect little treats for any craving.

Vegetarians and brunch seekers will appreciate menu highlights like The Avo, hummus spreads, and vegan shakshuka options, all reflecting The Apple Blue’s appreciation for diverse palates, though some recent guests have noted a desire for a wider range of vegan pastries. The inclusion of wholesome porridge and inventive sandwiches, such as the bacon and egg combo, bring satisfying variety to the breakfast fare.

Beyond the food and drink, customers frequently praise the welcoming vibe and attentive service. Olga Carroll reminisced about the nostalgic charm found in their honey cake, a sweet memory matched by the café’s ability to retain its enchantment despite growing popularity. It’s no surprise queues, especially on weekends, are common—a testament to the café's quality and community reputation. Yet, many, like Ashley Goncalves, have enjoyed quieter weekday visits with quick, smiling service and ample seating, underscoring the café’s accessibility throughout the week.

With operating hours that start early in the morning and stretch into the afternoon, The Apple Blue accommodates a broad spectrum of dayparts—from energizing morning coffees and creamy iced lattes to indulgent afternoon pastries and the whimsical frozen yoghurt creations, such as “Movie Night” or “FroYo Of The Caribbean.” It’s a place where breakfast and brunch are celebrated with passion and precision, drawing in a diverse crowd eager to savor expertly prepared food in a spirited, welcoming setting.

In essence, The Apple Blue isn’t just a café—it’s a destination for those seeking a sincere and satisfying breakfast or brunch experience in Balham. The combination of high-quality ingredients, skilled preparation, and a warm atmosphere ensures every visit is memorable, whether you’re chasing a nostalgic sweet treat or craving a fresh take on classic brunch dishes.

I first discovered Apple Blue Cafe years ago (pre-Covid), lured in by their honey cake that reminded me of the Russian medovik I grew up with. For a while it was my little nostalgic weekend ritual, until the place became so popular that the Saturday queues stretched longer than the Plot of War and Peace. At that point, I’ll be honest – it quietly slipped off my radar. I love cake, but I don’t love queueing for it. Fast forward to a rainy Monday morning when I decided to give Apple Blue another go. I ordered the avocado breakfast with two poached eggs, feta, and a generous drizzle of sauce. And honestly – delightful. The eggs were perfectly runny, the avo was properly seasoned (a shockingly rare achievement in London cafes), and the feta with chili flakes gave it that salty little wake-up call my Monday soul needed. Fantastic service too!

Its menu is impressively varied, offering options hearty enough for those with a big appetite, yet equally satisfying for diners seeking something lighter. This versatility makes it an easy choice for groups with different preferences. What truly sets Apple Blue apart, however, is its atmosphere. The setting feels distinct, designed to stand out from more formulaic cafés, with an ambiance that encourages you to slow down and enjoy your meal at leisure. The service is another highlight. Staff members aren’t just attentive but genuinely polite and approachable. They take the time to listen carefully, ensuring that each request is handled with consideration. It’s the kind of service that leaves you feeling valued, not just served. Altogether, Apple Blue Café & Restaurant is more than just a place to eat, it’s an experience that combines thoughtful service, a broad menu, and a setting that feels refreshingly individual.

A really nice place tucked away just around the corner from Balham tube station. It’s clearly very popular, as there’s usually a big queue on Sunday lunchtime. We decided to visit on a Saturday afternoon instead, and it was much more manageable with only a short wait. The atmosphere was welcoming, and everyone there was friendly, approachable, and more than happy to help, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable.

Nice cafe.. Always has a queue outside. We got a table and the service was very friendly. They had a vegan shakshuka which was really good. But otherwise they don't have many vegan options. Wish they had some vegan pastries etc. Dog friendly

Popped in on a Friday morning just outside Balham station. Quiet, plenty of seats at that time and quick service. Coffee was spot on and they do a loyalty card. Pastries were really good too. Worth a visit.

Already one of my favorite coffee shops. Food and service were impeccable, the cookie was one of the best I’ve ever had, and the staff were super friendly and quick. Can’t wait to come back!
